Arsenal could be set to benefit massively from Tottenham Hotspur winning the Europa League final against Manchester United.
Spurs have won just their second trophy this century, and their fans are over the moon.
It was a shocking final in Bilbao – both sides were terrible. But, one of them had to win it, and Brennan Johnson scored the only goal of the game to hand Spurs the Europa League title.
Tottenham have now qualified for the Champions League next season, but United will not be involved in any European competition.
That is good news for Arsenal in their pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres.
Manchester United are unlikely to be able to land the Sporting CP striker without Champions League football, and that makes the Gunners the favourites for his signature.
Fans think Viktor Gyokeres is ‘coming to Arsenal’ after Manchester United lost the Europa League final
Gyokeres is a key target for Arsenal this summer, and many think he would be a great option for the Gunners as they look to bolster their attack.
Fans are now convinced that Tottenham have done Arsenal a big favour by winning the Europa League because it all but rules out Manchester United in the race to sign the Sporting CP star.
One Arsenal fan tweeted: “United are out of the race for Gyokeres. Spurs did Arsenal a favour.”
Another said: “Viktor Gyokeres will prefer Arsenal over Manchester United since they failed to qualify for Champions League football next season.”
“Gyokeres is coming to Arsenal for sure now,” wrote another.
Another Gooner said: “Gyokeres to Arsenal, here we go!”
“Have to imagine Arsenal are in pole position for Gyokeres if they really want him. No chance he goes to United now,” tweeted another.
Arsenal should get Viktor Gyokeres deal done ASAP
Manchester United were the big competition in the Gyokeres race for Arsenal.
Ruben Amorim’s presence at Old Trafford gave them an advantage because of his relationship with the striker, but with no Champions League football, United cannot afford him.
That gives Arsenal a free run now, and Andrea Berta should do everything he can to wrap up this deal in the very near future.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Arsenal can sign Gyokeres for less than £55 million.
That would be a bargain for a number nine who has scored nearly 100 goals in all competitions in the last two seasons.
