Arsenal and Chelsea have always shared a bitter rivalry.
The two London clubs share an obvious geographical rivalry in the Premier League, but there have been other incidents over the years that have caused Arsenal fans to dislike their counterparts in blue.
From the Ashley Cole deal to Jose Mourinho’s controversial comments on Arsene Wenger, there have been many instances.
The latest comes after Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers, and they appear to have aimed a big dig at Arsenal, who were seen as the favourites to sign the player for several months.
“He chose Chelsea,” they wrote in their official social media posts announcing the signing. Arsenal fans, however, don’t think that’s entirely true.
Who should Arsenal sign now after missing out on Morgan Rogers to Chelsea?
Arsenal fans slam Chelsea’s social media post after signing Morgan Rogers
Morgan Rogers did not reject a move to Arsenal for Chelsea; it was the Gunners who withdrew their interest in signing him because of Aston Villa’s price tag.
That has been widely reported by all the top journalists, and Arsenal supporters have pointed that out to debunk what the Blues’ caption on their posts.
One Arsenal supporter tweeted: “I love how shamelessly Chelsea are making out that Morgan Rogers “chose Chelsea”. Aston Villa gave Arsenal the chance to match Chelsea’s ludicrous offer of £117m, Arsenal said “NO!”. Arsenal stood firm & would only offer £80m. Rogers did not have a choice!”
Another used a hilarious analogy and said: “Just went to the supermarket to buy some eggs. Was told they’re charging £5 for 6 eggs so I said no thanks and started to walk away. Some bloke in the back just shouted “I’ll pay £10” and started shouting “the eggs chose me”.”
“He “chose” Chelsea? Lol, like he had any other option,” wrote another.
Another fan reacted to Chelsea’s post by saying: “He did not choose Chelsea. Rephrase it to ‘no other club is stupid enough to pay this ridiculous fee for Rodgers’.”
“Absolutely ridiculous saying ‘He chose us’ on their OFFICIAL account, then the news dropped that Arsenal were given the option to match the bid and didn’t … meaning there was no choice at all,” posted another.
Another comment read: “”He chose Chelsea?” Of course he did. You slapped £117m with £200k a week on the table for a player Arsenal valued at £80–100m. Bid £80m instead. Let’s go band for band and see who he chooses.”
Be honest: Would you have been happy if Arsenal spent £117m on Morgan Rogers?
Chelsea have embarrassed themselves with their digs at Arsenal
It seems pretty clear that Chelsea are trying to poke fun at Arsenal and their fans with their announcement of Rogers.
Saying “He chose Chelsea” is bad enough when all the reports say otherwise, but that’s not all. The Blues’ announcement video script made Rogers call them ‘the biggest club in London’ too.
That is factually incorrect, as Arsenal have lifted more trophies, won more games in head-to-heads, are unbeaten in 11 meetings, have stayed in the top-flight longer and have a significantly bigger fan base.
Yet, every Chelsea signing, like Noni Madueke when he joined them, is made to call them the biggest club in London.
That status only belongs to Arsenal, and these little videos and social media posts will not change that.
