It’s fair to say that both Ian Wright and Thierry Henry are two of Arsenal’s most decorated strikers of all time.
On his part, Wright scored 182 goals in 283 games for Arsenal, a record Henry somehow managed to better.
The Frenchman netted 228 goals in 377 games, numbers that will never be repeated at the Emirates Stadium.
Kai Havertz was compared to Henry recently, but the German will never be able to match his level of scoring, even if he played for the Gunners for another ten seasons.
That’s not to disrespect Havertz’s level of output, it’s just impossible for most strikers to be compared to either Wright or Henry.
Ian Wright accidentally picks Wayne Rooney ahead of Thierry Henry
With that in mind, Wright dropped something of a clanger about Henry when speaking on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast.
The panel, which also included Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott and Roy Keane, were asked to name the best Premier League player from 2000 to 2010.

Wright initially responded by saying “I was going to say [Wayne] Rooney”, an answer he quickly regretted.
Scott agreed first of all: “I was going to say, Rooney [too].”
Keane: “[Cristiano] Ronaldo.”
Neville: “I’d go Henry, personally in that era.”
Wright swiftly interrupted: “Start again! Start again!”
And as you may imagine, the whole group were in hysterics that Wright had forgotten to mention Arsenal’s greatest player of all time, who thrived during that period.
Wright tried to explain himself in jovial fashion: “Do you know what it was? I just had Rooney on my mind from talking about him.”
He then changed his prediction: “I’m going Thierry, of course I have to, I think Thierry is the best ever.”
How do Wayne Rooney and Thierry Henry compare all-time?
Whilst Rooney is no means a terrible answer, Henry would surely be the first name on the lips of anyone associated with Arsenal.
Wright will be forgiven on this occasion, especially considering he suggested Dennis Bergkamp for the 10 years before that.
That being said, it is therefore interesting to compare Rooney’s and Henry’s numbers from their time in the Premier League, two prolific scores.
| Thierry Henry | Wayne Rooney | |
| Appearances | 258 | 491 |
| Goals | 175 | 208 |
| Goals per game | 0.68 | 0.42 |
| Assists | 75 | 139 |
| Assists per game | 0.29 | 0.28 |
Rooney (five) pips Henry (two) in terms of English league titles, but the Frenchman is clear when it comes to goals scored.
