Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale looks set to depart in the summer transfer window, and he could even play his final game for the club this weekend.

Ramsdale was dropped for summer signing David Raya earlier this season, but after the Spaniard initially struggled, he has now settled well and is performing superbly.

Raya now starts in the Premier League and Champions League, and Arsenal are now out of both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Given that he joined on loan from Brentford in the summer window, Raya will be ineligible to face his parent side this weekend, meaning that Ramsdale will gain what could be his last opportunity to start a game for the club, amid talk that he could depart for first-team football elsewhere.

Aaron Ramsdale has been professional since losing Arsenal place

Speaking on the Handbrake Off Podcast, Arsenal journalist Amy Lawrence claimed that Ramsdale deserves praise for the way in which he has handled his situation.

“There were a couple of times (against Sheffield United) that the TV cameras scanned across to the managers and the bench and dugout, and you can see Rambo in the background, and his energy and smiles and positive vibes,” she explained.

“You know sometimes you watch you see players in the background, when they’re watching and they kind of look half dead – Rambo I think deserves a really tremendous amount of respect and credit for the way, in what must be a very difficult circumstance for reasons we all know, he’s maintaining his positive energy within the team and within the squad.

“That is world-class for me as a kind of human touch. I’m really hoping that he gets to enjoy a great game, I think he’ll have a fabulous reception, quite rightly against Brentford and any other teams in games he might be called upon, because of his conduct.

“I’m sure that he’s a good influence in that dressing room, despite the difficulty of his personal situation.”

It was not easy for Ramsdale to be unexpectedly ousted from the starting XI for the surprise new goalkeeper, in very similar circumstances to when he joined Arsenal and replaced Bernd Leno.

Raya’s slow start meant that there was extra scrutiny on both goalkeepers, which helped neither, as Ramsdale came in and looked incredibly nervous in the reverse fixture against Brentford in November.

Ramsdale has not spoken out against Mikel Arteta or his fellow goalkeeper, and he performed fairly well against Liverpool in the FA Cup despite defeat in his final game.

This will be a good chance for Ramsdale to show what he is capable of, but it does feel like that will be his final game for the club barring injury or suspension to Raya.
