Arsenal warned clubs will be ‘knocking on the door’ for unsettled star in January

Andy Townsend expects plenty of clubs to show an interest in Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

There is plenty of speculation around the future of Aaron Ramsdale. Whilst Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Ramsdale plans to fight for his place at Arsenal, it is clear that the goalkeeper is not happy with his current situation at the club.

Having been the established No. 1 at the Emirates Stadium for the last two seasons, Ramsdale has now slipped down the pecking order, following the arrival of David Raya. 

For the good of his career, Ramsdale may well have to seriously consider leaving Arsenal as soon as possible. The 25-year-old needs to be playing regular football at this stage in his career, especially with EURO 2024 coming up in the summer. The four-cap England international stands no chance of surpassing Jordan Pickford in Gareth Southgate’s plans if he isn’t even the first choice shot-stopper at club level. 

Should Arsenal sell Aaron Ramsdale in January?

Andy Townsend expects lots of clubs to show an interest in Ramsdale if he is on the market in the upcoming January transfer window. Speaking on talkSPORT (14/11/2023, 09:55), the former Chelsea midfielder said, “if it’s not going to happen for you at Arsenal, I feel sure at some point there’ll be plenty of others knocking on the door…he might love it there, he might want to stay there, he might not want to move. Unfortunately, sometimes in this world you’ve got to roll with it and you’ve got to go with it and we’ll have to see where it all ends up.”

From an Arsenal perspective, it makes sense to try to keep Ramsdale at the club until the end of the season at least. He is an excellent goalkeeper who can provide reliable back up to Raya. What’s more, if he were to leave the club this winter, Mikel Arteta would need to bring in a replacement, which is a mid-season distraction that the Gunners could do without. 

That being said, Arsenal don’t have a huge budget to spend in January, and are aiming to strengthen in some key areas. Selling Ramsdale could be one of the few viable means available to them of raising some funds.
