Arsenal defender Ben White has turned his back on playing for England in the past.

With Gareth Southgate and his coaching staff now gone from the England setup, the question has now been raised as to whether or not Ben White will make a return to the international stage.

White is a key player for Arsenal, and a fan-favourite figure at the Emirates Stadium.

The right-back plays an important role in Mikel Arteta’s team, starts for the Gunners week in, week out, and has impressed with his consistency. What’s more, White is a master of the dark arts too, and enjoys a reputation as the North London club’s troublemaker-in-chief.

It is not an issue of quality keeping him out of the England picture, rather a decision he himself made.

Back in March, White withdrew himself from contention for England selection. At the time, the reason for his choice was kept private.

However, it has since been reported that a rift between White and the England coaching staff, namely Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland, was the true cause of the split.

However, Southgate and Holland are now out of the picture, with Lee Carsley, having been promoted from his former position in charge of the Three Lions’ under-21s outfit, now overseeing things on an interim basis.

Will Arsenal star Ben White return to England duty?

It would seem that the stage is set for the 26-year-old’s return to international football.

However, as reported by the Daily Mail, White has not indicated that his stance has altered, despite Southgate and Holland’s departure.

As such, it would appear that he remains unavailable to Carsley.

This will come as a blow to the England boss, as White has been in exceptional form for the Gunners and has all of the qualities required to shine at international level.

Mikel Arteta will appreciate White’s England stance

Whilst Carsley may be frustrated by White’s decision, Arteta will have no issue with it whatsoever.

White enjoyed a relaxed summer, without having to take part at Euro 2024. If he can continue to benefit from rests during international breaks throughout the season then that will help him to negotiate Arsenal’s own gruelling fixture schedule.

The former Brighton man is a nailed-on starter for Arsenal. White also has a reputation for playing through pain and whilst injured, but Arteta will not want him to have to endure this.

Not taking part for England will reduce the strain on his body, which is good news for the Gunners.
