Former Liverpool and Everton midfielder Don Hutchison has now revealed why he was so impressed by Arsenal in their win over Newcastle United.
Arsenal produced a superb performance as they thrashed Newcastle United 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.
A Sven Botman own goal got the ball rolling for the Gunners, and also marked Arsenal’s 700th Premier League goal at the Emirates Stadium. Kai Havertz then doubled the north London club’s lead, before Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior added gloss to the scoreline in the second half.
A late consolation goal for the Magpies from former Arsenal man Joe Willock did nothing to disguise the gulf in quality that had been apparent between the two sides.
Mikel Arteta’s side were intense and at it from the first whistle. The hosts’ usual danger men, such as Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Saka posed a consistent threat. With his strike, Saka also became the first English Arsenal player to achieve one Premier League feat since Ian Wright.
The home side were equally impressive off the ball. Jorginho caught the eye of Arsenal fans for his work in the middle of the park.
In the first half especially, Arsenal gave the Tyneside outfit absolutely nothing. In fact, for the first time in a Premier League match for a decade, Newcastle failed to muster a single shot in the opening period.

Don Hutchison amazed by Arsenal display against Newcastle
This Arsenal performance did not come out of the blue, either. Arteta’s men have now won their last six Premier League games on the bounce. In this period they have scored 25 goals and have conceded just 3 times. This run includes two separate 5-0 victories, and a 6-0 win against West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium.
There is still a long way to go in this title race, and Manchester City and Liverpool both have their own advantages over Arsenal. However, it is clear that the Gunners mean business, and few would rule them out of being able to take the fight to be crowned champions right down to the wire.
Don Hutchison certainly feels that Arsenal are a force to be reckoned with. Speaking on ESPN FC after the Gunners tore Newcastle apart, he said, “they went at Newcastle, they got the early goal. It was relentless… I know they’ve hit West Ham for six, and they hit Burnley for five, Arsenal, but I think that was their best performance by a mile this season. It was how aggressive they were. They took no prisoners. They were slick in their passing… Newcastle just couldn’t breathe, but it was the quality of Arsenal that blew me away.”
Arsenal now have huge momentum on their side, and need to carry that into their next Premier League fixture, which will see them take on the struggling Sheffield United on Monday, March 4th.
