Bukayo Saka reveals what Arsenal players actually thought about Kai Havertz before he joined

Kai Havertz has become one of Arsenal’s best players.

The Germany international came under a lot of criticism early on in his debut season. Not many people understood why Mikel Arteta spent so much money to sign him.

Havertz’s three-year spell at Chelsea was underwhelming, even though he scored the winner in the Champions League final while he was a Blue.

That made many people think he would be a flop at Arsenal, but Havertz has been unbelievable since the turn of the year in the famous red and white.

Bukayo Saka and Arsenal players had the same thoughts about Kai Havertz before he joined

Arsenal paid an initial £62.5 million to sign Havertz from Chelsea in 2023.

It did seem like a strange move at the time because the Gunners signed the German to replace Granit Xhaka, who had left to join Bayer Leverkusen.

Xhaka and Havertz aren’t really very similar players, and that’s probably why the former Chelsea man struggled in his first few months at the Emirates.

However, since being moved to a false-nine role, Havertz has been absolutely incredible for Arsenal. He is one of their best players now, and his numbers are truly fantastic.

Bukayo Saka has been speaking about Havertz, and the Arsenal number seven claimed that he, and every other player at the club, ‘always’ felt that the German was an ‘unbelievable’ player.

Speaking to CBS Sports, Saka said: “I’ve always thought Kai’s an unbelievable player. Everyone in the dressing room did too.

“We’re so happy that he’s showing that. This season he has come out with even more confidence, I think he’s scored in almost every game.

“He’s going to score a lot of goals this season. He has a really good understanding around the box, when to attack it, and that’s why he gets a lot of chances and that’s why hopefully he’ll score a lot of goals.”

Havertz and Saka are on track to break their personal records

Havertz and Saka have both had an incredible start to the new season.

The two players haven’t just been brilliant on their own, but they have formed a great understanding together and have combined regularly as well.

Havertz is on track to score around 30 goals in all competitions this season if he keeps scoring at the same rate. That would make this his best-ever goalscoring campaign, surpassing the 20 he scored for Leverkusen in 2018/19.

Saka is on track to break Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne’s assists record. The Englishman has provided seven already in the Premier League – he needs just 14 more in 31 games to become the English top-flight’s assists king.
