Charles Sagoe Jr says there’s an Arsenal player who’s an absolute ‘joke’ in training

Arsenal academy winger Charles Sagoe Jr has lifted the lid on what it’s like to train with Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Sagoe Jr made his Arsenal debut in the Carabao Cup against Brentford back in 2023, earning an opportunity he’d been envisioning his whole life.

Since then, the Englishman hasn’t featured for the Arsenal first team, but he has managed to make the matchday squad three times, being named on the bench in the Champions League this season.

That won’t be enough for Sagoe Jr, who will be desperate to get more opportunities on the pitch, but for now, he’s relishing learning from those around him in training.

Charles Sagoe Jr says Bukayo Saka is incredible in Arsenal training

When taking to the training pitches at the Sobha Realty Training Centre, there’s one player who stands out in the Arsenal academy forward’s eyes.

That figure, unsurprisingly, is Bukayo Saka, whom Sagoe Jr spoke very highly of when speaking to Charles Watts for GOAL.

Some of Saka’s idols are Hale End products, and now, the winger is having the same impact on those currently in the academy.

“Bukayo’s someone I look up to because he’s had a similar pathway to most of the Hale End boys growing up,” Sagoe Jr said.

He then gave an insight into what it’s like to train with a player of Saka’s calibre.

“Seeing what he does on a day-to-day basis is honestly a joke. What you see on the TV is how he’s applying himself every day in training. It’s very inspiring.”

There’s no better inspiration for those in the academy than Saka, who has walked the walk from a hopeful to become Arsenal’s poster boy.

Sagoe Jr is charmed by Saka, but the 24-year-old isn’t the one who has been impressing at Colney.

Gabriel Martinelli is a fantastic trainer at Arsenal, described as having a ‘ferocious’ attitude behind the scenes.

Arsenal fans will be delighted to learn that Viktor Gyokeres has been training very well, which, hopefully, will help the Swede to up his goal tally this season.

Given the standards that Arteta has implemented at Arsenal, it’s unsurprising that his players are leaving it all out there in training, with a lot to achieve over the year ahead.
