Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein has completed a loan move to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, who are pleased to have secured his services for the season.

Karl Hein has embarked on his third loan move whilst on Arsenal’s books, after spells with La Liga side Real Valladolid and EFL outfit Reading.

The 23-year-old is set to compete with Mio Backhaus, who has been promoted to the role of No. 1 at Bremen after Michael Zetterer joined Eintracht Frankfurt.

Werder director Peter Niemeyer and goalkeeping coach Christian Vander both explained why they were happy to have the Arsenal stopper at the Weserstadion.

Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein has ‘huge potential’

Niemeyer described Hein as a ‘high-quality’ goalkeeper who impressed the German side after his efforts for Valladolid and Estonia.

“We’re pleased to have filled the gap left by Michael Zetterer’s departure so quickly with Karl,” Niemeyer told the Werder website.

“He’s a goalkeeper who impressed in La Liga last season and has also shown his qualities for the Estonian national team.

“With him, we’ve now got a complete group of high-quality goalkeepers.”

Meanwhile, Vander said: “Karl is a young goalkeeper with huge potential.

“For his age, he already has a lot of match experience. On top of that, he’s trained at the highest level with Arsenal in recent years.

“He’s a good character and we’re convinced he’ll fit into the group and bring healthy competition.”

What is the point of Karl Hein’s latest loan move?

At first glance, Arsenal’s decision to loan Hein out seems strange, considering his contract is listed as expiring in 2026.

This would suggest that the Gunners have merely loaned him out for the rest of the season before losing him on a free transfer next season.

However, Ryan Taylor of The Mirror has reported that the Hein deal actually includes an option to buy.

In addition, Arsenal are said to have a one-year option on Hein’s contract, so the deal makes more sense this way.

Hein will hopefully either convince Werder to sign him or, if not, the loan spell would put him in the shop window.

Arsenal can then take up their year’s option and sell the 23-year-old in one of the next two transfer windows.
