Danny Murphy says something that is being talked about around Arsenal is ‘ridiculous’

Danny Murphy has dismissed certain suggestions that are being made around Arsenal as ‘ridiculous’.

The Gunners are enjoying a spectacular season, as they currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League and second in the Champions League table, having won 14 of their 16 matches in all competitions.

The manner in which Mikel Arteta’s team are securing these results is remarkable, conceding just three goals across all competitions.

Arsenal matched a 122-year-old club record on Tuesday by winning their eighth successive game without conceding, and this isn’t the only record they’re gunning for this term.

Danny Murphy says he can’t see Arsenal beating Chelsea’s defensive record

In the 2004/05 season, Chelsea conceded just 15 goals in the Premier League.

This was the fewest a team has ever shipped in the division’s history, and it hasn’t even come particularly close to being beaten.

In fact, in most seasons, this record would already be close to being protected after ten rounds of matches. Not this season.

Arsenal are putting up ridiculous defensive numbers, conceding just once from open play so far this campaign.

Many are now debating whether the Gunners can beat Chelsea’s long-standing record, and former Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy has chimed in on this debate.

“No. No, can’t see that [Arsenal breaking the record],” he said.

“I think 15 is nothing short of ridiculous to maintain that level of consistency. They’ll have a little bad spell where they’ll concede a couple here and there.

“15 is ridiculous, that’s absolutely crazy numbers, I’d be amazed if they equal or beat that.”

Arsenal are on course to beat Chelsea’s record

Petr Cech thinks Arsenal can break Chelsea’s record, and the numbers suggest that it’s possible.

The Gunners need to concede fewer than 12 goals in their remaining 28 matches, which is certainly a tall task, but their current rate is better than this.

Arsenal are currently conceding 0.3 goals per game, meaning they’re on course to concede just 11.4 by the end of the season.

Thus, if they sustain their current defensive record, then it’s possible that they smash the Blues’ record.

That said, Arsenal have conceded 5.6 expected goals so far this term, which indicates that they are running slightly hot defensively, and can expect to concede at some point soon.
