Petr Cech shares if he thinks Arsenal can break Chelsea’s 15-goal Premier League record

Arsenal’s defence has been one of the most discussed topics in the Premier League this season.

The Gunners maintained the best defensive record in the division in each of the last two campaigns. They conceded 34 goals last season and just 29 in the year before.

Those numbers are really impressive on their own, but Arsenal have let in just three goals in nine Premier League games this term.

That has given them the chance to replace Chelsea in the history books.

Petr Cech responds when asked if Arsenal can break Chelsea’s 15-goal Premier League record

Chelsea hold the Premier League record for the fewest goals conceded in a season.

The Blues, when Jose Mourinho was at the helm in the 2004/05 campaign, let in just 15 goals in 38 games to win the title.

Many teams have tried to break that record over the last two decades, but nobody has come close. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal now have a chance.

After seeing their team concede just three times in the first nine games, with only one of those strikes coming from open play, Arsenal fans are confident that they can break Chelsea’s record.

If they continue at the same rate, the Gunners are projected to let in 12.67 goals in 38 games, which would make them the best defensive side in Premier League history.

Petr Cech, who was a part of the Chelsea side that currently holds the record, has had his say on whether his former club can do it.

He told John Terry on TikTok: “Well, you know, they are doing really well, I have to say. It’s early in the season, but you have to start somewhere.

“If they carry on like that, then they have a chance, but at the same time, it’s a hard job. 38 games, you need to have a little bit of luck sometimes.

“I think it will be hard for them to break our record, but I will be following because they started well.”

The main reason why Arsenal can break Chelsea’s record this season

Cech is right, it will be very difficult for Arsenal to break Chelsea’s record.

There’s a reason why nobody has come close to conceding just 15 times in the entire season over the last two decades, but records are meant to be broken.

Arsenal have started the season brilliantly and are on track to finish the campaign with the best defensive record in the history of the Premier League.

The one reason why it is possible is Arsenal’s squad depth.

The Gunners have elite backup options across the backline. So, if any of their regular back four get injured or need a break, they have top-quality options to replace them without any real drop in performance.

That is why we think Arsenal will break Chelsea’s record this season.
