David Raya left Gabriel Magalhaes visibly ‘confused’ as Arsenal beat Sevilla 2-1 in the Champions League after the goalkeeper cowed to the angry boos of the home crowd.

The two even also exchanged words on the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan pitch after Mariano Diaz enjoyed a chance to score straight after. That is according to football.london, which claims that Gabriel sought to tell Raya to stick to the game plan that Arsenal wanted against Sevilla.

Goals by Gabriel Martinelli (45+3’) and Gabriel Jesus (53’) gifted Arsenal enough of a margin to ultimately beat Sevilla. Nemanja Gudelj (58’) replied for his La Liga side in the second half as Los Nervionenses chased a draw. Raya also tipped another Diaz shot onto their crossbar.

Raya confused Gabriel on a shaky night as Arsenal beat Sevilla

Raya’s night was far from perfect, though, and he nearly handed Sevilla an equaliser against Arsenal in stoppage time. Diego Alonso’s squad mounted endless pressure in the late stages of the Group B tie. But the two-cap Spaniard misjudged the flight of Juanlu Sanchez’s cross.

Luckily for Arsenal against Sevilla, the ball landed on the roof of the net as Raya’s attempted punch went backwards. It was also just his latest error in the match that nearly resulted in a goal. His first poor mistake that irked Gabriel came soon after Los Nervionenses scored, too.

Arteta surely must now question starting Raya over Ramsdale

Gabriel spread his arms in disbelief at Raya shortly after the hour mark at Sevilla after the Arsenal goalkeeper cowed to vigorous boos from the home crowd. The Gunners wanted to waste a bit of time from a goal kick shortly after conceding. But Raya booted the ball long.

Raya yielded to the Sevilla fans’ growing resentment and instantly turned the ball over. Diaz also enjoyed a chance to score in Los Nervionenses’ next attack. The 30-year-old’s shot only just went over their bar before £27m defender Gabriel sought to exchange words with Raya.

His skewered punch under little pressure in stoppage time only served to increase all doubts surrounding Raya, too. All the while Aaron Ramsdale watched from the bench, as boss Mikel Arteta again overlooked the 25-year-old. But Arteta surely must now question starting Raya.
