Ex-Chelsea man ‘can’t believe’ what he’s now heard about Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has been shocked by rumours that Mikel Arteta could be set to leave Arsenal. 

Rumours have recently emerged to suggest that Mikel Arteta could be due to leave Arsenal at the end of the season.

Xavi has recently announced that he will be giving up the Barcelona top job at the end of the current campaign. The La Liga giants are thought to be eyeing up Arteta has Xavi’s replacement at the Camp Nou.

As things stand, Arteta only has 18-months remaining on his current contract at the Emirates Stadium. The club are keen to extend his tenure, and Arteta is thought to want to stay. Edu must now be doing all he can to ensure that a new contract is signed as soon as possible. 

Journalist Guillem Balague has also confirmed that Arteta has no plans to leave Arsenal this summer.

talkSPORT presenter Tony Cascarino is also convinced that Arteta staying at Arsenal is the best thing for the former midfielder at this stage in his coaching career. The former Republic of Ireland forward said, “that’s not going to happen. I can’t believe Arteta, he’s got a job that he needs to finish at Arsenal and that is success. No, I just don’t see that. I don’t see that at all.”

Attention at Arsenal should not be on Mikel Arteta right now

Arteta really does have unfinished business at Arsenal. He has made the north London club genuine Premier League title contenders once again and has restored them to the Champions League. He now needs to finish the job he has started with this talented young squad he has built, and win some major silverware.

The Gunners could still win the Premier League title this season, of course. Although they face a tough task in overhauling Manchester City and current league leaders Liverpool, there are still good reasons to believe that Arsenal can be crowned champions come the end of the campaign.

It is vital now that the speculation around Arteta’s future, and the links with the Barcelona hot seat, are not allowed to become an unwelcome distraction at Arsenal. Full focus at the club needs to be on their upcoming fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool. If the Gunners can take six points from those two matches then they will be right back in the heat of the title race.

On top of that, of course, there are the final days of the January transfer window to contend with, and there is still the slim chance of some business being done by the club.
