Freddie Ljungberg revealed why he signed for Arsenal

Freddie Ljungberg made 328 appearances for Arsenal over a nine-year spell at the club and revealed that Arsene Wenger was the real reason he signed amid interest from top European clubs.

Speaking to TNT Sports pundit and former team mate Martin Keown, Ljungberg revealed his admiration for working under Wenger.

Ljungberg stated: “All the respect in the world for the boss. Actually when I signed for Arsenal, I signed because of him.

“I was actually going the next day to meet the Italian team that won the league and the next day the Spanish team that won the league that was what was lined up for me as to where I wanted to go,

“My agents were not too happy with me when I said no no I want to sign here on the first meeting and it was all because I sat with Arsene for an hour and we didn’t talk about money nothing, we just talked about football.”

Freddie Ljungberg revealed one thing he didn’t like about Arsenal

Arriving from Swedish club Halmstads as a relatively unknown star, Ljungberg faced some challenges adapting to life in North London and revealed one thing he did not like upon joining.

Ljungberg explained: “I came to Arsenal and I had never played winger before in my whole life, so I had to come and learn in the best league in the world to play as a winger which I didn’t like the first year I must be honest.”

Ljungberg’s preferred position upon joining the Gunners was in the number ten role however, that was occupied by Dennis Bergkamp.

The Swede worked hard to adapt to a new position and ended up becoming one of world football’s deadliest wingers in front of goal.
