Graeme Souness says one Arsenal player is not good enough because he’s ‘too nice’

Like every other team, Arsenal have weaknesses in their squad.

The Gunners have challenged for the Premier League crown for two seasons in a row, and they are in the mix again this campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s side are capable of beating every club in the world on their day, but there is still room for improvement in their side.

Graeme Souness has had his say on one area of the pitch where Arsenal aren’t quite good enough.

Graeme Souness delivers brutal verdict on Arsenal star Kai Havertz

Arsenal signed Kai Havertz for £65 million from Chelsea in the summer of 2023.

Almost everybody who saw the news was left scratching their head, and the German’s difficult start to life in North London made him the most criticised man in the country.

However, Havertz turned things around at Arsenal and ended last season with 14 goals and seven assists, which is not a bad record by any means.

The former Chelsea man started this season well too. He has already scored 12 goals, but because he hasn’t scored in the last three games, everybody is on his back.

Now, Souness has jumped on the bandwagon and has claimed that Havertz will never be good enough to lead the line for Arsenal because he’s ‘too nice’.

The pundit wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “I questioned why they paid £65 million to Chelsea for Kai Havertz. I said at the time Arteta must think he can improve him because you wouldn’t pay that for his performances and goalscoring.

“He scored 19 league goals in three seasons. That’s nowhere near enough goals for a striker or attacking midfield player.

“My description of him would be he’s too nice. I’m sure he’d make a great son-in-law but he hasn’t got enough devilment in him.

“And Jesus is more of the same – 18 league goals in 70 games. If he was a top-level finisher, Manchester City wouldn’t have let him go. It’s blatantly obvious that those two are not the answer.”

There’s one thing Souness and others keep forgetting about Havertz

Havertz has never been a prolific goalscorer and he probably never will be.

Arsenal definitely need to dive into the market to sign someone who will guarantee 30 goals a season, and we’re sure Arteta will do that either in this window or the next.

But, some of the criticism directed towards Havertz is unnecessary.

People like Souness completely ignore everything else Havertz brings to the team. The German puts his body on the line every game to win possession, and his intelligent movement brings the best out of everyone around him.

Havertz deserves a lot more credit than he gets – hopefully, that will happen in the coming games.
