Ian Wright blasts X-rated rant over referee mistake during Arsenal’s win over PSV – but Alan Shearer disagrees

Arsenal wanted to secure a lead in their first leg clash with PSV Eindhoven but could never have expected to virtually put the tie to bed.

Mikel Arteta’s side put the Dutch side to the sword with as Arsenal demolished PSV 7-1 at the Philips Stadion to all but secure a place in the Champions League quarter final.

Arsenal fans claim Martin Odegaard is ‘back’ after the skipper scored a brace and supplied Riccardo Calafiori a sublime assist for the seventh goal on the evening.

The Dutch media have hailed Jurrien Timber for his performance, which included the opening goal on the night however, Arsenal legend Ian Wright is furious about one particular referee mistake from the game.

Ian Wright furious with referee mistake in Arsenal’s Champions League victory

Speaking on the latest edition of his podcast Wrighty’s house, the former Arsenal striker vented his fury at Arsenal not being given a penalty in the first half for a challenge on Odegaard when the game was at 0-0.

Wright stated: “It’s a penalty because it’s clumsy. It was clumsy running back, Martin Odegaard can’t see him, his legs going to shoot and he’s impeding him. He’s clumsy, he’s running into the back of him, it’s a f—— penalty.”

After a VAR review, the referee on the night Jesus Gil Manzano decided not to award a penalty and on commentary for Amazon Prime Video, Alan Shearer was in agreement.

Shearer stated: “I think he kicks the ground himself, I’m not sure there’s any contact there so it’s a good decision from the referee.”

Myles Lewis-Skelly fortunate to escape red card for Arsenal

That wasn’t the only controversial incident in the match as Myles Lewis-Skelly was fortunate to escape a red card during the first half of the match after two mistimed challenges.

Chris Sutton believed Lewis-Skelly should have been sent off whilst former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg disagreed with Shearer over the incident.

Arsenal certainly could have had no complaints had the youngster been shown a second yellow card and he was swiftly replaced by Calafiori after the incident.

Arsenal fans expressed concerns over Lewis-Skelly’s discipline and it is an area of his game that he needs to improve as he develops his career at the Gunners.
