Ian Wright thinks having a player like Eberechi Eze around Viktor Gyokeres made him look ‘very effective’ during Arsenal’s win over Tottenham.

Eze and Gyokeres both netted braces against Tottenham, securing a massive three points for the Gunners in the Premier League title race.

Following their recent form, Mikel Arteta took a huge gamble starting both; however, they repaid him with top-notch performances.

Following the 4-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Wright has been talking about how Eze helped make Gyokeres so much better.

Ian Wright is impressed by Eberechi Eze’s connection with Viktor Gyokeres

Ian Wright believes that Eberechi Eze’s connection with Viktor Gyokeres helped to make the striker improve so much against Tottenham.

The former Arsenal star claims having Eze so close to him allowed him to suss out the weaknesses in Spurs’ defence, which he then exploited.

When asked whether that was Gyokeres’ best performance, Wright told Stick to Football: “Yes, I think so. I think Tottenham were poor with how they tried to mark him. Eze made a great run for his first goal.

“But I was always looking at the finishing with Gyokeres, how quickly he can get it down and finish it. It was like how Odegaard set him up; he just moved the defender and finished it.

“I think that when he has someone like Eze close, and he can pick out the weakest defender, Dragusin was the weakest, and when we saw that, he showed he can be very effective.”

Wrighty is now excited by Gyokeres’ goal-scoring exploits and is backing him to keep helping Arsenal break down these types of defences.

“I said he could get between 10 and 12, but if he carries on now, he could get more. If he can get on that run now, hopefully he can score those goals,” he added.

“People always talk about him scoring against the lower-end teams, which he did in Portugal, but that’s what Arsenal needed.

“We scored goals against the top six, we needed to break down that kind of defence and score goals against that type of team.”

The win over Tottenham was Gyokeres’ best performance to date; he was up against a makeshift defence, though, so he still has much to prove.
