Arsenal head into their crunch FA Cup Third Round clash against rivals Manchester United off the back of two disappointing results.

Arsenal were held at Brighton in the Premier League before succumbing to a devastating 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in the semi final of the Carabao Cup.

It seems Jason Ayto is being trusted with the January transfer window as sporting director following the departure of Edu Gaspar in November.

Mikel Arteta is desperate for attacking reinforcements and Nico Williams is a target for Arsenal among many other names that have been linked. Arteta has delivered an update on potential January business that will be of great interest to fans.

Mikel Arteta says new Arsenal signings are ‘always a possibility’

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the FA Cup tie with Manchester United, boss Arteta was quizzed on Arsenal’s January transfer plans and whether they want to sign a forward player.

Arteta stated: “It’s always a possibility, if it’s somebody that is going to make us much better. We always have discussions with the ones above about how we can improve the team.”

However, Arteta then made it clear to fans that Arsenal would not panic in the market and bring in somebody to just make up numbers.

Arteta, on what he looks for in a signing, explained: “First of all, someone who can impact the team, bringing bodies it doesn’t help at all. In this market that is something very difficult to achieve.”

It may not have been the answer Gunners fans were looking for especially after Arsenal revived their interest in Alexander Isak.

Arteta thinks scoring goals isn’t an issue for Arsenal

Despite claims of Arsenal lacking in confidence in front of goal, Arteta has moved quickly to dismiss these claims and explained that actually Arsenal are in fine attacking form.

Arteta stated: “We have scored more goals in the calendar year than any other, I don’t think that can be a problem.”

Alexander Isak proved why fans are excited at the prospect of signing him by scoring against the Gunners in the cup, also on a night where forward Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz missed golden opportunities.

It may be the case that Arsenal are waiting for ‘perfect’ Viktor Gyokeres to become available in the summer but Arteta knows that he is under pressure to deliver silverware this season.

Defeat and more missed chances in the FA Cup against Manchester United could have more Arsenal fans calling for Arteta to be sacked. It really is a huge game in the context of the season.
