A lot has changed at Arsenal from last season, and there’s one alteration that Jamie Carragher just can’t comprehend.
It was always expected that the Arsenal squad would look largely different to how it did over the 2024/25 calendar, as Andrea Berta made eight new signings in the summer transfer window.
The new arrivals and several first-team exits gave Mikel Arteta some decisions to make when considering what his best starting XI would be this campaign, and two players were stung more than others.
Arsenal’s academy saw Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri graduate last season, with the pair making a combined 49 Premier League appearances in 2024/25, but since then, they’ve barely played.
If Myles Lewis-Skelly could only play in one position for the rest of his career, would you have him at left-back or in midfield?
What's his best position?
Jamie Carragher can’t believe what’s happened to Myles Lewis-Skelly at Arsenal
Nwaneri is now on loan at Marseille, and hasn’t taken any time at all to show France that he’s a superstar in the making.
Back at Arsenal, Lewis-Skelly continues to be used sporadically, which is something Jamie Carragher struggles to understand.
When speaking about England’s World Cup squad on Sky Sports, Carragher admitted that he’s stunned by the change in Lewis-Skelly’s career over the past six months.
“I was looking at Myles Lewis-Skelly, especially probably six months ago, 12 months ago,” Carragher said.
Agree or disagree, it’s impossible to argue with Jamie Carragher on this one
“What I saw him do in an Arsenal shirt away at Real Madrid, I thought he’d be playing in this team right now, but he doesn’t play for Arsenal. He almost feels like he’s third choice for Arsenal right now.”
Carragher was right about Arsenal’s attack, and now, he’s spot on about Lewis-Skelly, as the teenager’s fall down the pecking order has been a shock.
The 19-year-old is now behind Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie in the queue at left-back, with his minutes showing no sign of improvement.
Lewis-Skelly’s performances against Real Madrid prove Carragher right
Carragher referenced Lewis-Skelly’s performance at the Bernabeu, but in truth, the Hale End product starred against Real Madrid both at home and away.
After the first leg, Spanish media raved about Lewis-Skelly, as he looked like one of the most experienced players on the pitch among a Real Madrid side packed with greatness.
Looking at this, can you believe that Lewis-Skelly isn’t playing for Arsenal right now?
Following that incredible night at the Emirates, it was thought that things couldn’t get better for the teenager, but then he entered the Bernabeu.
Lewis-Skelly took Gary Lineker’s breath away against Real Madrid in the second leg, as the teen didn’t put a foot wrong when the stakes couldn’t have been higher.
Reflecting just forces us to return to Carragher’s comment, as truthfully, it’s difficult to work out how things got to where they are now for the rising star.
