Jamie Redknapp thinks he knows what defenders are thinking about Viktor Gyokeres after Leeds brace

Viktor Gyokeres is up and running in the Premier League, scoring two on his first competitive appearance at the Emirates.

Arsenal beat Leeds United 5-0 in the first home game of the Premier League season, with Gyokeres at the forefront of the win.

Jurrien Timber was the deserved man of the match, contributing to three of the five goals on the day, but Arsenal’s striker would’ve been the happiest man in the dressing room.

Gyokeres collected so much criticism after his Premier League debut at Old Trafford, but very quickly, he flipped the script, leaving his doubters with some tough questions to answer.

Jamie Redknapp makes Viktor Gyokeres prediction

Even early into the clash with Leeds, Gyokeres was criticised by Gary Neville for missing a chance to score in the first half.

The Swede responded in the best way possible, ending the game with two goals, one of which came in expected circumstances.

Gyokeres scored his trademark goal, taking his marker out to the left side before cutting in and shooting to score, something he did so frequently at Sporting CP.

After Arsenal’s win, pundit Jamie Redknapp predicted what defenders preparing to face Gyokeres are now thinking after watching him in action against Leeds.

“If you’re a centre-back now watching that, and you’re going to be playing against him in the coming weeks, you do not let him come inside on his right foot,” Redknapp said to Theo Walcott in the Sky Sports studio.

“Show him down the line as much as you can, because once he does, you can see the destruction he can cause.”

Defenders will realise how Gyokeres likes to play and the runs he likes to make, but while identifying the threat is one thing, preventing it is another.

Gyokeres made his time on the ball count

Just like when Arjen Robben would cut in on his left and Cristiano Ronaldo would leap for a header, some things just can’t be stopped.

For Gyokeres, the heart and soul of his marksmanship is using his strength and speed to get into positions to score.

Against Leeds, we saw just that, as the Swede’s performance simmered down to his presence in the final third, and very little else.

Gyokeres made only four passes and had 24 touches in 90 minutes, but he scored twice from three shots on goal.

Arteta’s summer signing epitomises exactly what the boss needed: a striker who won’t beat around the bush when it comes to generating goal-scoring chances.

With his confidence growing day by day, who knows what the 27-year-old could unleash at Anfield?
