Arsenal made a surprise announcement in September that CEO Vinai Venkatesham confirmed that he was to leave the club at the end of the season.
Venkatesham has played a key role in the Arsenal executive alongside Edu Gaspar and Josh Kroenke amongst others as the club found new energy on and off the pitch with Mikel Arteta.
A few months later, Arsenal have now announced how the structure of the hierarchy will now change as a result of his pending exit, as current Director Of Football Operations Richard Garlick will move role to become Managing Director.
Whilst this is not a like-for-like replacement for Venkatesham, it seems that the club’s reshuffle will see Garlick take on a bigger role as internal replacements are being utilised.
Josh Kroenke delighted at new Arsenal role for Richard Garlick
Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke has now expressed his delight at Garlick’s impact, and highlighted why he is suited to this new role.
“Richard is recognised and respected across the industry for his vast experience, and we were delighted when he joined us back in 2021 to take our football strategy to the next level,” he told club media.
“He has made an enormous impact since joining us, working closely with our Sporting Director, Edu, on the development and implementation of the club’s football strategy. He has developed strong relationships right across the club and wider industry.
“Rich has been key to the progress we’ve made as a club – including recent transfers – and I’m thrilled he will now lead our Executive Team and continue to drive the club forward with passion.”
Richard Garlicks’ impact at Arsenal since 2021

Garlick joined the club in January 2021, at around the same time Arteta’s side started finding their form to climb up the table, and the summer of 2021 was a transformative one as the likes of Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Martin Odegaard arrived to help take Arsenal up a level.
Kroenke highlighted his role in “recent transfers,” and given the success rate Edu and Arteta have had on them, with the likes of Gabriel Magalhaes, Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus helping take Arsenal from mid-table to title challengers, it is clear that Garlick’s impact has been a positive one.
Arsenal are currently hamstrung by financial fair play, but could look to spend big in the summer, and Garlick will be overseeing a crucial window as the likes of Martin Zubimendi and Victor Osimhen are linked.
