Max Dowman won’t play as much as Arsenal fans want next season, as Hale End star’s development plan revealed

Max Dowman isn’t likely to feature for Arsenal regularly in the 2025/26 campaign, despite the youngster’s impressive pre-season performances, Arsenal Insider understands.

Despite only turning 15 last December, Dowman has produced some exceptional cameos for Arsenal in their last few friendly matches in Asia.

The teenager was outstanding off the bench against Newcastle in Singapore, prompting calls for Mikel Arteta to use him frequently in the first team next season.

However, the Gunners are cautious about integrating a player of his age and will carefully manage how many opportunities he is granted at senior level in the upcoming campaign.

Max Dowman unlikely to play regularly for Arsenal next season

Scoring 15 goals and providing five assists in 15 under-18 Premier League appearances last season, Dowman is making waves in the Hale End academy.

Rewarded for this promise with a call-up to Arteta’s pre-season tour squad, the starlet has shocked fans with how mature and capable he has looked playing with senior footballers.

That said, Dowman doesn’t turn 16 until later this year, and Arsenal are prepared to err on the side of caution when it comes to integrating the player into competitive first-team matches.

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey told Arsenal Insider that he doesn’t think ‘we’ll see an awful lot of Dowman next season’.

“They’re very happy with Dowman,” he said .

“He won’t be rushed into things before he’s ready, they’ll take their time. Given the summer Arsenal have had, there won’t be too many spare minutes going round in midfield or on the right.

“I think he’ll get the odd chance here and there, but not particularly in the Premier League, I wouldn’t have thought. I don’t think we’ll see an awful lot of Dowman next season if I’m being brutally honest.

“But that’s probably a positive thing, given Arsenal’s squad and the strength in depth they have now. He’s only 16 in December, so there’s not an awful rush for Arsenal to get him into the first team; there’s plenty of time for that.”

Arsenal should integrate Max Dowman in League Cup games

Performing in low-intensity pre-season games is one thing, delivering similar displays in a Premier League match is another.

Dowman will never have played in a game as physically intense and fast-paced as an English top flight match, and throwing him in before he has fully developed could be a baptism of fire that he’s not ready for.

However, there could still be senior minutes available for the wonderkid next season.

Ultimately, Dowman is unlikely to start over either Bukayo Saka or Noni Madueke on the right wing in the league, nor is he likely to be granted minutes in midfield over Martin Odegaard or Ethan Nwaneri.

However, as Arsenal rotate in the early rounds of the League Cup, there could be opportunities for him to start or come off the bench.

Against lower league opposition in the domestic cup, the intensity and pressure won’t be quite as high, and this could be the perfect environment for Dowman to develop and settle into men’s football.

Ashley Cole warned Arsenal fans to be cautious with Dowman back in April, and it appears the club are themselves set to take this conservative approach.
