Mikel Arteta watched Arsenal match a Premier League record in Bournemouth defeat, it sums up the season

Arsenal’s defeat to Bournemouth saw Mikel Arteta lead his side to match an unwanted record.

The 2-1 loss against Bournemouth left Arsenal’s claim to a second-place finish in jeopardy, as Manchester City closely follow.

Only three points separate Pep Guardiola’s side from the Gunners, telling of how poor Arsenal have been in recent weeks.

Just six points from a possible 12 have been collected by Arsenal in their previous five Premier League games, with the North Londoners at risk of seeing their season collapse.

Arsenal match unwanted Premier League record after Bournemouth defeat

After securing back-to-back Premier League runners-up finishes, Arsenal have regressed this term.

The Gunners’ injury list has played a part, as has recruitment and the overall form shown by those on the pitch.

Warning signs were there before the turn of the year, as Arsenal eclipsed their draw tally of the entire 2023/24 campaign in December, with dropping points becoming an unwanted theme.

After taking the lead and then losing against Bournemouth, Arteta watched his side match a club Premier League record.

For the first time since the 2019/20 campaign, Arsenal have dropped 21 points from winning positions, which is their joint-most ever.

Given that Arsenal finished eighth that season, Arteta will surely be alarmed by the rate at which his squad are letting points slip from their grasp, a trait that has cost the Premier League title once again.

Underwhelming season for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta

A damaging injury record this term hasn’t helped Arteta to achieve his goals, but key absences do not justify dropping so many points from winning positions.

21 Premier League points translate to seven wins, a tally of points dropped after being ahead that has allowed Liverpool to cruise to winning the title.

In-game management is clearly lacking, which is something Arteta must be studying hard to resolve when drawing up his pre-season plans.

With three games remaining, there’s a chance that Arsenal will break their points-dropped record before the end of the season, which ultimately sums up the disappointment of the 2024/25 campaign.
