Arsenal moved to within four points of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League after a late brace from Mikel Merino secured three points against Leicester City.

Arsenal fans want to see Mikel Merino at centre forward

When Merino stepped on to the pitch, Arsenal were in trouble having only mustered one shot on target and were struggling to penetrate a stubborn Leicester City defence.

However, the Spaniard soon showed that he could provide something different in the role and after a couple of nice touches and hold up play, he came alive in the box to produce two fine finishes.

He headed home a Nwaneri cross with just eight minutes left on the clock, before dispatching a cross on the volley from a Leandro Trossard assist.

Ethan Nwaneri compared to Lionel Messi by pundit Joe Cole

Arteta was full of praise for Nwaneri after the game and no wonder given the stunning impact made by the 17-year-old winger.

Nwaneri was Arsenal’s only bright spot in a drab first half and continued to be a threat in the second half as he rattled the bar twice with some ferocious efforts.

He then produced an excellent cross for Merino to open the scoring and after the game TNT Sports pundit Joe Cole compared the Hale End graduate to Lionel Messi.

Raheem Sterling struggles again in an Arsenal shirt

From the moment the game kicked off to when he was dragged off in the 69th minute, Raheem Sterling struggled to make any impact on the game whatsoever.

The England international was lethargic in his movement, caught offside on several occasions and lacked any conviction in anything he attempted on the pitch.

Sterling will have to improve performances if he is to gain the trust of his manager in the coming weeks amid Arsenal’s injury crisis but the performance against Leicester City would not have enhanced his chances of game time at all.
