Jermaine Jenas believes Arsenal could make a shock move for a Newcastle player in an upcoming transfer window.
The Gunners have been active in the market this summer, acquiring seven players and spending in excess of £250 million in the process.
Eberechi Eze became the latest to be added to Mikel Arteta’s ranks, signing from Crystal Palace for £68 million late last week.
Andrea Berta doesn’t appear to be prepared to stop there, with Arsenal now exploring a deal to sign Piero Hincapie.

Jermaine Jenas says he could see Arsenal signing Sandro Tonali
Arsenal’s squad looks in good shape heading into the main portion of the 2025/26 season.
Arteta has several options in every area of the pitch, and he subsequently shouldn’t be left depleted due to a handful of injury issues.
That said, in 12 months time, with players perhaps not getting the volume of minutes they’d want in N5, some sales could be made.
The likes of Mikel Merino, Leandro Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri could be among those who are left disappointed with their roles, and could push for an exit.
This would likely leave the Gunners needing another reinforcement in midfield, and Jermaine Jenas has revealed his belief that Sandro Tonali could be an option Arteta explores.
“Tonali is a good player, but are you going to see an Arsenal or Liverpool going for him?” Jenas was asked on the Wildcards podcast.
“I don’t see why not,” the former Tottenham midfielder responded.
“Listen, there was a stage last year when I looked at Newcastle’s midfield, when it was Joelinton, Tonali and [Bruno] Guimaraes. It was arguably the best midfield in the league at one point.”
Arsenal have been linked with Alexander Isak, as well as Anthony Gordon, from Newcastle in the past, with Tonali’s name rarely mentioned as an option for the Gunners.

Arsenal shouldn’t sign Sandro Tonali in the future
While Tonali is a talented footballer, he wouldn’t be a smart pick-up for Arsenal.
Given Newcastle paid a reported £55 million for his services, the Magpies would likely demand an excessive fee for him if they were to sell next summer.
By that point, he’ll be 26, which isn’t the age profile for which you would want to spend over £60 million, especially on a player who is merely likely to be a back-up option.
| Statistical Comparison 2024/25 (All Competitions) | ||
| Stat | Rice | Tonali |
| Appearances | 35 | 36 |
| Pass Accuracy | 89.6% | 83.7% |
| Progressive Passes per 90 | 6.11 | 4.38 |
| Goals | 4 | 4 |
| Assists | 7 | 2 |
| Tackles per 90 | 1.69 | 1.75 |
| Progressive Carries per 90 | 2.87 | 1.27 |
The Italian is unlikely to usurp Declan Rice or Martin Zubimendi any time soon, and he’s not a promising youngster with huge potential, so simply wouldn’t be worth this outlay.
In addition, his data is somewhat underwhelming, suggesting this would be an overpay even if he was to come in as a guaranteed starter.
