Arsenal have the chance to win both the Premier League and the Champions League this season but there’s a debate already starting over whether that would surpass the Invincibles.
Arsenal’s famous squad in 2004 went all season unbeaten and ended up as Champions.
It is a feat that hasn’t been matched since and in reality, it’s going to take a herculean effort for anyone to even get close.
Ian Wright has claimed that this current team will surpass The Invincibles if they do win both trophies.
However, his good friend Paul Merson seems to disagree.
Arsenal Invincibles vs Current Arsenal team: Who goes down as the GREATEST squad if Arsenal do the double this season?
Paul Merson says no Arsenal team will match The Invincibles
The Invincibles team achieved something that nobody in Premier League history had managed prior or since.
Really, it is one of the hardest things to achieve in football and because of that and a few other factors, Merson believes this current Arsenal team cannot match them.
“I wouldn’t say it’s got to[be up there with being unbeaten]. But winning the Premier League and winning the Champions League can be done again. Being Invincible will never be done again. Plus, winning the title and Champions League has already been done, but nobody has been invincible since that team,” Merson said.
“So, it’s a lot harder to go invincible in this day and age. No [I don’t agree]. I think two teams have already done that, Man United and Man City, but nobody has gone invincible.”
If Mikel Arteta’s team do the double, then they will go down in Arsenal history in their own special way.
Beating this current Man City team and also cantering away from last year’s champions, Liverpool, with such ease is an impressive feat in itself.

Of course, winning the Champions League would be the ultimate icing on the cake as well.
Rest assured, while the debate might rage on about the Invincibles, this team has a chance to create its own moment in time.
