Paul Merson believes Arsenal’s win at Anfield in 1989 is not celebrated enough
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson revealed that he believes the club’s success at Anfield in 1989 to win the league title is not celebrated enough by Arsenal.
Merson stated: “I think the game got brushed under the mat a little bit if I’m being honest, I think it wasn’t appreciated as much as what it should have been, I think really the club should have done something virtually all the time because it was such a massive thing.”
“To beat probably the best team about at the time I mean, you watch the game and I wasn’t a tackler I wasn’t one of them lads and neither was Smudge [Alan Smith] but some of the tackles that were flying in.”
The Gunners needed to win at Liverpool by two goals on the final day of the season to snatch the league title away from the Merseyside club.
Alan Smith put Arsenal ahead midway through the second half before Michael Thomas scored a dramatic late winner to seal the most extraordinary win in the club’s history.
Paul Merson’s Arsenal career
He was part of that historic evening at Anfield but Merson believes Arsenal will lose to Liverpool in their upcoming clash.
The former Gunners’ midfielder had a stellar career at the club and made over 400 appearances during his time in North London.

Merson once scored a winning goal at Anfield and his team mate Ray Parlour spoke of the difficulty playing against Liverpool with a raucous home crowd behind them.
Arteta’s side know they will have to silence the crowd in order to gain control of the match and find that all important victory to secure Champions League football for next season.
