Sergio Ramos outlines key Arsenal weakness Sevilla wanted to ‘take advantage of’

Sergio Ramos has now outlined the weakness in Mikel Arteta’s side that Sevilla tried to ‘take advantage of’ against Arsenal in their Champions League tie this Tuesday night.

The Gunners took a 2-1 win at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to climb atop Group B after three games. Gabriel Martinelli (45+3’) and Gabriel Jesus (53’) scored on either side of the break before Nemanja Gudelj (58’) replied. Arsenal held on to the win amid Sevilla’s late pressure.

Sevilla were a difficult test for Arsenal in spells throughout their midweek clash in Andalusia. Diego Alonso’s side enjoyed chances to score throughout and nearly drew level when David Raya tipped Mariano Diaz’s shot onto the crossbar. Raya was at fault for a few of their shots.

Sergio Ramos feels Sevilla had ‘chances to hurt’ Arsenal in the Champions League

But it was not Raya, who even left Thierry Henry ‘scared’, that Ramos claims Sevilla deemed to be Arsenal’s weakness. Instead, the four-time Champions League winner for Real Madrid claims Los Nervionenses felt they could ‘hurt’ Arsenal given the areas Arteta’s tactics leave.

Ramos is clearly a fan of how Arteta has Arsenal playing, nonetheless. The 37-year-old adds that the Gunners and Real Madrid are, currently, playing the best football in Europe. Even if Sevilla ended the night kicking themselves for not exposing the north Londoners’ weakness.

“One-against-one, we had chances to hurt them knowing that Arsenal are a team that wants to play football,” Ramos stated, via quotes by football.london. “That leaves a lot of space on the line to take advantage of those losses that we sometimes found.

“But we did not capitalise well enough. I think that, in the end, we played face-to-face, both against Real Madrid and Arsenal. It is true that it is difficult not to see a difference before we played the teams that, for me, currently play the best in Europe.”

Mikel Arteta will hope teams do not now use Sergio Ramos’ claim as a blueprint

Sevilla hosted Arsenal this Tuesday night on the back of drawing 1-1 with Real Madrid, who currently top La Liga. Los Blancos had only failed to win one of their previous nine matches in Spain’s top-flight this term. While Los Nervionenses are now 13th, having won just twice.

Arsenal also headed to Andalusia on the back of drawing 2-2 with Chelsea after coming from two goals behind. Arteta will hope the weakness that Ramos spots in his side does not act as a blueprint for how to beat them. The Gunners could have dropped points on another night.
