Sverre Nypan thinks Arsenal have a player better than Erling Haaland

Arsenal know that they will have to increase their attacking output if they are to pip Liverpool to the Premier League title this season.

Despite being very early in the season, it is already shaping up to be a two-horse race between Mikel Arteta and Arne Slot with Liverpool having the edge after their 1-0 victory at Anfield.

Last season, Liverpool powered their way to the title with an exuberance in attack and have added Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike to their mix this summer.

Arsenal responded by adding Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze to their attacking ranks in the hope that they can fire the Gunners to the title. Former transfer target Sverre Nypan thinks the Gunners have a player better than Erling Haaland to call upon this campaign.

Sverre Nypan thinks Martin Odegaard is Norway’s best ever player

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester City midfielder Nypan has claimed that Martin Odegaard is Norway’s best ever player but doesn’t aspire to model his own game on the Arsenal captain.

Arsenal were ‘confident’ of signing Nypan this summer before Pep Guardiola stole a march on the young Norwegian midfielder.

Nypan stated: “I haven’t had no contact with him [Odegaard], but I remember when he came through, it was around 2015, and I was a young player.

“He obviously became a role model for a lot of Norwegians at that time. And you can also see that he didn’t go right up to Arsenal. He had some ups and downs. So you just see that a player of that quality, also has some ups and downs.

“You just have to learn from everyone and try to replicate what they have done. I won’t sit there and say that it’s not a nice comparison [Odegaard] because it’s an honour to be compared to a great player like that.

“Maybe the best ever from Norway! So it’s great to get the comparison, but we are we are not the same player.

“For me, we’re quite opposite. We are maybe in a similar type of area in the midfield, but the playing style is different. I won’t grow up to be a Martin Odegaard, that’s for sure.”

Competition for places at Arsenal could see return to form for Martin Odegaard

Odegaard was far from his best last season and even by his own admission he knows it is a big season at the Gunners for him.

Despite a shoulder injury sustained against Leeds, Kevin Nolan was ‘impressed’ with Odegaard when he came on against Liverpool as he looked to get Arsenal back in the game.

Straight away, you could see an increase in intensity from Arteta’s side and Odegaard is often the orchestrator of that in terms of moving the ball quickly and pressing from the front.

Having the likes of Eze and Ethan Nwaneri vying for his spot in the side will only serve to sharpen the captain’s focus.

Odegaard has proven he is capable of contributing goals and assists in the Premier League and Arteta will need that from his captain if they are to land a major trophy this season.
