Thierry Henry knows a thing or two about where the back of the net is.

With 228 goals across 377 appearances for the Gunners, the Frenchman is the club’s all-time top scorer, comfortably clear of second place Ian Wright, another Arsenal legend.

Henry is therefore a good authority on the ability of the modern game’s current forwards.

And after one in particular caught his eye as Henry was at the Concacaf Nations League on Sunday, the 47-year-old was quick to dish out credit.

Thierry Henry praises Jonathan David after match-winning performance

Speaking after Canada beat the United States 2-1 in the third-place final, Henry waxed lyrical about the performance of Arsenal target Jonathan David.

The Canadian provided an assist for teammate Tani Oluwaseyi in the first half before bagging the winner with a composed turn and finish in the second.

As a result, Henry was quick to congratulate the 25-year-old post-match on CBS Sports.

The Frenchman said: “I was waiting for you to deliver when you went to France. I didn’t know if you were going to deliver… [but] you did that, so I can say you are good now.”

Henry expanded: “You have to show, and you did show. You won the League in France [and had a] great run in the Champions League.”

David fired Lille to Ligue 1 glory in 2020-21, scoring 12 goals in the process.

Henry concluded by emphasising: “I just wanted to say congratulations because you backed it up, and I like to see that.”

David is out of contract at the end of the season and again cast doubt on his Lille future following the victory against the United States.

Speaking to CBS Sports, David emphasised: “I’m not sure if I’m staying at Lille.”

His intentions have been known for some time, with several clubs from around Europe monitoring the Canadian.

One of these clubs is Mikel Arteta’s side, Arsenal having long been admirers of David during his time in France.

If Arsenal want to bolster their attacking options, and with David able to sign a pre-contract agreement with other sides, the club will need to move quickly to secure the forward’s signature.
