There has been a lot of speculation about Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation, as number one Aaron Ramsdale has recently been dropped for new signing David Raya.
Although Ramsdale has come in for some criticism, some may argue that his performance levels did not warrant losing his place in the side, but Raya has looked accomplished in both of his appearances so far and is yet to concede a goal.
Raya started ahead of Ramsdale as Arsenal returned to the Champions League, comfortably beating PSV Eindhoven at the Emirates.
Speaking on CBS Sports the game, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry weighed in on the situation, claiming that Mikel Arteta does not intend to rotate the pair, and that Raya has now overtaken Ramsdale in the pecking order.
“Mikel Arteta is the coach. He sees David Raya as a guy that can make him win the league,” he stated.
“When Bernd Leno left Arsenal he saw Ramsdale as a guy who can make him go into the top four. I think that if he goes and gets David Raya – he went to get him, he thinks he’s a better goalkeeper.
“There is no rotation there, he thinks that David Raya is better and that’s about it. People have to stop with that goalkeeper thing. When you play at a big club, competition will happen.”
What will happen to Ramsdale?
The England International signed a long-term contract during the summer transfer window, in the knowledge that Raya was of interest to the club, and both goalkeepers have welcomed the competition, as there now two top-quality options in the position.

It seems that for now, Raya will start in the Premier League and build up a run of games, but Ramsdale could potentially come in for the cup competitions, including Arsenal’s next Champions League game against RC Lens.
It seems unlikely that Mikel Arteta will completely discard Ramsdale, but for now, his place is in jeopardy and in the long run it remains unclear how the situation will be resolved.
