Troy Deeney wasn’t entirely impressed with Viktor Gyokeres’ North London Derby brace due to the level of opposition Arsenal faced.
Gyokeres had his best game for Arsenal against Tottenham, being rightfully named Man of the Match by Gary Neville.
Not only did the Sweden international score, but his overall performance was terrific; however, Deeney still isn’t buying it.
Deeney has criticised Gyokeres multiple times, and even after his North London Derby heroics, the pundit had something to say.
AGREE or DISAGREE: That was Viktor Gyokeres’ best performance in an Arsenal shirt so far…
Troy Deeney still sceptical about Viktor Gyokeres after North London Derby due to how poor Tottenham were
It was only several weeks ago that Deeney named Gyokeres in his BBC Team of the Week.
To the former Premier League striker’s dismay, he’s had to do it again, including the Arsenal star in his BBC Team of the Week for his two goals against Tottenham.
Still, however, Deeney was reluctant to give Gyokeres his flowers.
“He scored two against Spurs. Yes, the opposition were mediocre with a terrible backline, but he doesn’t care.
“The rest of his play was better as well. I can’t give him too much credit, but you can only score against the teams put in front of you.”
It was a surprising take, but one that should have been expected, as when it comes to pleasing Deeney, Gyokeres just can’t win.
Viktor Gyokeres responded to Troy Deeney’s big game concern against Tottenham
No, Tottenham aren’t the most threatening opposition, but form can go out of the window when it comes to the derby.
Viktor Gyokeres has eight goals in 2026, how many more will he score before the end of the season?
Spurs’ quality aside, it was a monumental game for the argument of rivalry and the title race.
In September, Deeney asked, “Where was Gyokeres in the big games? In the big moments? Where was he?”
The Arsenal striker responded to Deeney by scoring two fantastic goals in the North London Derby, but it still wasn’t enough.
With 15 goals for Arsenal in 36 appearances, Gyokeres could be doing better, but he could be doing a lot worse, so the forward deserves to earn praise when it’s due, which on Sunday, it was.
