Viktor Gyokeres shares his first words as an Arsenal player
Gyokeres will have the weight of expectation thrust upon his shoulders as he joins the club with many believing he is the missing piece to their first Premier League title in over 20 years.
He will fly out to Asia to join up with his new teammates and could make his debut against North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season friendly.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Gyokeres stated: “It’s a very big day for me and everyone around me.
“I’m really excited to get going and meet everyone in the club and just to start playing football for this amazing club.
“I always want to score, to be a part of this club and to score in this kit and with this badge in front of all the supporters, I can’t wait. It will be an amazing feeling.
“I started here [in England], it feels like a long time ago. I think I’ve improved a lot since then. Now I want to prove myself for real and perform together with the team.
“It’s a big honour to play for your country, and then to score goals for them is amazing. When I played at Sporting, I scored a few goals in the Champions League so I feel that I can be on that level as well.
“Now to come here to a club on Arsenal’s level, I think it’s going to help me perform even better with all the amazing players in this team. I’m really excited to get going.”
Viktor Gyokeres is the marquee signing Arsenal were expected to make
Supporters are tired of hearing the narrative that Arsenal need a striker. Kai Havertz did a magnificent job leading the line and helped to bring others into play.
It was obvious that the Gunners did need another option in their attack, however, someone who sniffs out chances and shows deadly composure when they fall their way.
Gyokeres is that player and his goal record at Sporting Lisbon has turned him into one of the most feared strikers in Europe.
It is now up to the likes of Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka to provide the chances for the Swede and it may even occur alongside Havertz in the side as Mikel Arteta now has the option of playing two up top.
