Eddie Nketiah made everyone at Arsenal proud by scoring the winner against Liverpool.
The Crystal Palace star came through the ranks in the Arsenal academy after joining the youth setup when he was 14 years old.
Nketiah broke many records at youth level, but he could not establish himself as a mainstay in Mikel Arteta’s side at the Emirates.
In the summer of 2024, Nketiah joined Crystal Palace, and on Saturday, he made his biggest contribution yet for the Eagles.
Video: Ian Wright’s brilliant reaction after Eddie Nketiah’s winner vs Liverpool
Like Eddie Nketiah now, Ian Wright has a connection to both Arsenal and Crystal Palace.
The legendary Englishman played for the Eagles back in the day before moving across London to join the Gunners.
Nketiah’s journey has been the opposite, but Wright would’ve been proud of what the former Arsenal number 14 did on Saturday.
The 26-year-old came on as a substitute in the second half of the game against Liverpool, and he produced the biggest moment of the match.
In the 97th minute, Nketiah showed immense composure to smash a left-footed strike past Alisson Becker to win the game for Palace.
Wright was in attendance at Selhurst Park, and his reaction to Nketiah’s goal was caught on camera.
“Eddie, Eddie, Eddie,” he could be seen chanting after celebrating the former Arsenal striker’s goal.
Eddie Nketiah has had a difficult time since leaving Arsenal
Internally, Nketiah was very highly regarded at Arsenal.
The English striker was loved by Arteta at the Emirates, so much so that the Arsenal manager gave him a £100,000-a-week contract and the iconic number 14 shirt.
However, it became very clear that there was no future for him, so he was sold to Palace in 2024.
Many people expected Nketiah to become a star at Selhurst Park, but he has mostly just been a backup to Jean-Philippe Mateta there.
That is a shame, but Arsenal fans will forever thank him if his winner against Liverpool proves decisive in the title race at the end of the season.
