Wayne Rooney has reason to believe that Mikel Arteta could be sacked by Arsenal at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Rooney has been complimentary of Arsenal this season, but that hasn’t stopped the Manchester United icon from sharing some bizarre opinions.

The discourse after the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Crystal Palace is focused on Arsenal being the best team in the Premier League right now, so Rooney brought the North Londoners back down to earth.

Discussing Arsenal’s chances of winning the league, Rooney shared his opinion that, despite recent success, Arteta’s job isn’t entirely safe.

Wayne Rooney thinks Mikel Arteta could be sacked at the end of the season

The Spaniard has been Arsenal manager since December 2019, and it’s difficult to measure how much has changed in that time.

Arteta took over a side that recorded back-to-back eighth-place finishes, turning them into Europe’s team to beat.

In Rooney’s eyes, the progression isn’t enough, as when speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the pundit revealed his doubts about Arteta’s future.

“If they don’t win it now, then, you know, you probably see a change of manager if they don’t win it now.”

Rooney thinks that not delivering the Premier League title this season could cost Arteta his job, which is quite ridiculous.

Arteta is making Arsenal better and better

Arteta has been instructed to do more of the same from managers of his calibre in Europe, but in Rooney’s opinion, the pressure is on.

Sure, major silverware is overdue, but winning the Premier League is not easy, with Arsenal failing to finish top of the table since the 2003/04 Invincibles season.

Not winning the league this season would be a problem, but to think that such would cost Arteta his job is wild.

Clean sheets: 6
Goals conceded: 3
Fewest shots faced: 72
Fewest shots on target face: 19
Fewest expected goals against: 5.3xG

There’s little chance that Arsenal’s hierarchy would feel at all dissatisfied with Arteta anytime soon, which is an opinion supported by the numbers the Gunners are recording this season.

No team in the Premier League is close to Arsenal defensively this season, and it’s all thanks to Arteta and his coaching staff.

To think that Arsenal would look at what the boss is delivering and think of changing the man at the helm is bizarre, but Rooney is entitled to his opinion.
