Arsenal have a new goalkeeper after sealing an initial loan transfer from Brentford for David Raya. But the Spaniard has an awkward neck tattoo to tell his latest teammates.

The Gunners moved to improve manager Mikel Arteta’s options between the sticks with the arrival of Raya on Tuesday. He signed up to an initial season-long move from the Bees. While Arsenal got a £27m option to buy Raya in the terms of his £3m loan transfer from Brentford.

Raya has followed Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice in sealing moves to Emirates Stadium this summer. Arteta has bolstered his squad across the pitch in the hopes of making Arsenal title threats again. He has also guided the Gunners back into the Champions League.

Why Pele Is Overrated.

Raya’s transfer from Brentford could give Arteta issues at Arsenal

Having two proven No1 goalkeepers in Raya and Aaron Ramsdale may give Arteta a problem as they fight for superiority. Both can stake their claim to being the Spaniard’s first-choice for the role. Both should also suit the tactician’s system with their proven abilities in possession.

Yet Raya’s move to Arsenal saw some rival fans scoff after they caught what Arteta has done at London Colney. One of the Gunners’ reveal videos showed the Spaniard has photos of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup trophies on one wall at the training ground.

Arsenal also made a bit of a blunder with another reveal photo after securing Raya’s loan-to-buy transfer from Brentford. The north London team, most likely unintentionally, highlighted a tattoo on the back of Raya’s neck in one of the images taken in his official club photoshoot.

Among a raft of images taken during the photoshoot, Arsenal got Raya to pose with his back to the camera but in doing so, revealed the tattoo on his neck. The photo was likely taken to highlight the 27-year-old taking the No22 jersey. But Raya’s tattoo edges above the neckline.

Raya’s neck tattoo simply reads ‘13-08-21’ to denote the date of his and Brentford’s Premier League debut. But it may be awkward at Emirates Stadium as the Bees beat the Gunners 2-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard offered the two goals.

Brentford more than deserved their result after Arteta’s team struggled to beat Raya or pose a continuous threat. Emile Smith Rowe produced the Gunners’ best effort to find a way past the Spaniard. While Raya also did well to deny Nicolas Pepe during the latter stages, as well.
