Myles Lewis-Skelly has become the talk of the town following his performance against Manchester City.
The Gunners were the slight favourites going into the game against Pep Guardiola’s side, but nobody expected to see Arsenal beat City 5-1.
Lewis-Skelly played a massive part in the game and even scored his first-ever goal for the club. It was a fantastic strike with his weaker right foot.
The teenager has now become an undisputed starter, but the decision-makers at Arsenal considered a different path for the youngster last summer.
What Myles Lewis-Skelly ‘insisted’ before rejecting loan move away from Arsenal
Left-back is probably the only position where Arsenal have serious squad depth.
The Gunners have solid players across the pitch, but the only position in their squad where they have at least five options is at left-back.
Riccardo Calafiori joined Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jakub Kiwior, Kieran Tierney and Lewis-Skelly at Arsenal in last summer’s transfer window. Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu have also played at left-back before.
Lewis-Skelly hadn’t even made his senior competitive debut for Arsenal at that point. So, the decision-makers at the club thought about sending him on loan, reports The Independent.
But, the teenager was having none of that.
The report claims that Lewis-Skelly ‘insisted he was going to be in the first team’ this season, and that confident stance has been proven right.
The 18-year-old must now be one of the first names on the team sheet for Arteta every week.

Lewis-Skelly’s loan decision says a lot about his mentality
Talent, ability, skill and physicality are all important traits in football, but if a player doesn’t have an elite mentality, he will not make it at the highest level.
There are absolutely no fears on that front for Lewis-Skelly.
For an 18-year-old who had never played in the first team to tell experienced coaches and decision-makers at the club that he would not go out on loan was a brave move, especially considering the competition for places in his position.
However, Lewis-Skelly didn’t just talk the talk, he has walked it as well, and that shows just how elite his mentality is.
If he keeps this up, we’re convinced he is going to be one of the best players in the Premier League in the coming years – irrespective of which position he plays in.
