What Ruben Amorim once said about Mikel Arteta

Amorim has only been tested twice in the Premier League since being unveiled at United, winning against Everton and drawing with Ipswich Town.

It’s too early to judge the Portuguese coach, however, Arteta already has an idea of what to expect from Wednesday night’s opponent. 

Arsenal faced Amorim’s Sporting CP in 2023, crashing out of the Europa League after a dramatic two legs.

In the build-up to Arsenal’s clash with Sporting that season, Amorim shared his thoughts on Arteta, with a message to fans of the Portuguese club at the time.

“This year we are struggling, but Arteta is an example because he was able to withstand the pressure, which is unbearable for a team in the Premier League.

“Now he is bearing the fruits, it is important for fans to understand that to pick up the fruits from your work, you have to wait.”

Amorim expressed his admiration for Arteta’s ability to remain strong amid criticism, something that’s particularly interesting now that the 39-year-old is in England.

The Red Devils boss might just be sending a similar message after the two clubs meet in North London, with Arteta eyeing redemption after the Europa League defeat.

Arteta’s record against Amorim and Manchester United

The Spaniard has a point to prove against Amorim, who he has yet to beat in his managerial career. 

Arteta has come up against the former Sporting boss twice, representing the two legs from Arsenal’s Europa League meeting. 

While the Arsenal manager averages only 0.5 points per match against Amorim, Arteta’s record against Man United is far stronger.

In his managerial career, Arteta has faced United nine times, winning six of those meetings, drawing once and recording two defeats.

Such equates to a stellar 2.11 points per match, giving Arsenal confidence ahead of Wednesday night’s blockbuster.
