From the outside, there’s no fault detected in Arsenal’s central defensive duo, but they think otherwise.
Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba’s partnership has played a huge role in Arsenal becoming genuine contenders for the Premier League title.
Since Saliba returned from successive loan spells, Arsenal have become defensive masters, starting by launching a title-challenging campaign in 2022/23.
Arsenal’s defence is now celebrated often, which wasn’t the case for so many years, and the majority of the turnaround is thanks to the Frenchman and his counterpart, Gabriel.

William Saliba knows his partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes is missing something
Though Saliba gets a lot of attention due to his age and his rise at domestic and international level, Gabriel is just as integral to Arsenal.
Together, Saliba and Gabriel are the Premier League’s best central defensive pair, but to the players, one thing is missing.
Arsenal’s star duo were named in the PFA’s Premier League Team of the Year, and at the awards ceremony, Saliba spoke to Beanyman Sports.
In the interview, the France international was asked about his defensive partner, whom he was full of praise for, but insisted their partnership is missing trophies.
“I’ve been playing every game with him; he’s been injured for the last few months, now he’s back at his best,” Saliba said.
“He was so good against Manchester United again. We just miss trophies, we play good, we are good, but we miss trophies, we have to win trophies with Arsenal to be even better.”
Saliba’s admission is no surprise, as the duo have only won the Community Shield together at Arsenal, coming in 2023/24.
Saliba eyeing World Cup and Premier League glory
The only accolades in Saliba’s senior trophy cabinet are two Community Shield medals, but Gabriel has a league title to his name, winning the Croatian league with Dinamo Zagreb in 2017/18.
The Frenchman is desperate for silverware, something he wants to achieve not only with Arsenal but with his country too.
With the 2026 World Cup in sight, Saliba commented on the idea of winning the ultimate prize in the summer.
“With France in the summer, hopefully, but first with Arsenal.”
The 24-year-old has his mind and heart set on winning big with the Gunners, something that will be music to Arsenal fans’ ears.
