Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has created a huge problem for himself with his handling of his goalkeeper selections.
There is currently a massive amount of media attention on who starts between the sticks for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has picked summer loan arrival David Raya ahead of Aaron Ramsdale in each of the Gunners’ last three matches, prompting plenty of speculation about who the true No. 1 is.
Given Raya started the Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven and the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, all the indications are that he is now Arteta’s preferred first choice.
However the Arsenal manager has refused to state that this is outright the case. Instead he has hinted at regular rotations, and even that he may potentially take the unconventional step of substituting goalkeepers within matches.

Arteta must stop media circus
Officially demoting Ramsdale would have seemed harsh to many, as the 25-year-old has been a solid performer for the north London club since his £30 million arrival in 2021. However, it would have at least put the matter to bed. Arteta has every right to make such a call after all, no matter how ruthless.
Instead, though, there is now endless media and fan obsession over what the future of the position holds. This is an unwelcome distraction for the club during a crucial period of the season.
Every time Raya makes a save, people talk about Ramsdale. Every time Raya concedes a goal, people talk about Ramsdale. The destiny of every Raya pass sparks discussions about Ramsdale. This situation isn’t helpful for either player.
Arsenal need clarity over this situation sooner rather than later, and only Arteta can provide that. Jamie Carragher, Thierry Henry, Garth Crooks, Peter Schmeichel, Micah Richards, and Ray Parlour, amongst many others, have now weighed in on the Raya vs Ramsdale debate. For the good of the club, Arteta needs to end the conversation by declaring a firm decision.
