Arsenal succumbed to their first home defeat in the Champions League this season to PSG.
Ousmane Dembele’s fourth minute strike was enough to settle a tense affair and one that Mikel Arteta’s side may look back on with regret.
Arsenal fans were furious with the referee after a number of contentious decisions went against the Gunners in the first half before Mikel Merino saw a header ruled out for offside just after half time.
The French media slammed Martin Odegaard for his performance and some Arsenal supporters are calling for Ethan Nwaneri to play in the return leg. Another player however, showed Arteta why all is not lost in the tie.

With Thomas Partey’s suspension, Merino was asked to play in a deeper midfield role alongside Declan Rice and after a slow start from the duo that allowed Dembele to score, they grew into the game.
Merino was unfortunate to have his goal disallowed by just straying offside but was tenacious in the duels as usual and displayed real progression with his passing range.

The Gunners showed on a number of occasions in the second half in particular that physicality in midfield could be the way to overcome a skilful PSG trio.
Both Rice and Merino began to exert their physical authority on the game and Arteta will need to look at that as one option going into the return leg.
Mikel Merino should move to centre forward upon Thomas Partey return
Merino also displayed his ability in the air during the Champions League clash at the Emirates Stadium, he caused a number of problems from set pieces.
Arteta will bring Partey back into the base of midfield for the game in Paris, which would enable Merino to replace Leandro Trossard as the false nine.

Arsenal some saw some success with Merino in the air up against the PSG centre backs and by pushing him further forward, it also allows Rice the freedom to play higher up the field.
The Gunners will no doubt have to absorb pressure in Paris but with Merino’s ability to win aerial duels and protect the ball, there may be some joy on the counter attack awaiting for Arteta’s side.
