Whilst the January transfer window was a quiet one for Mikel Arteta, that should now preclude a summer of progressive spending at Arsenal.

There’s a few profiles on the wish list, primarily the signing of a new striker like Ivan Toney.

And whilst that should also be followed by the signing of a central midfielder to perhaps replace Thomas Partey – Arsenal are unlikely to stop there.

Strength in depth in defence has still been an issue this season, even with all fit Arsenal arguably look a centre-back short.

Although Ben White will still be considered centrally, William Saliba doesn’t have an obvious alternative.

And therefore, another right-footed centre-back should arrive, even if no one leaves other than Cedric Soares this summer.

Jurrien Timber often played centrally at Ajax, but it seems his long-term Arsenal future could be at full-back.

All that being said, Arsenal and Mikel Arteta should now be considering Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini this summer. 

The 20-year-old Italian looks to be one of Europe’s most exciting profiles, a centre-back with so many tactical advantages.

Perhaps the easiest way to delineate Scalvini’s profile and potential is to compare him with John Stones’ skill set.

Stones has been a pillar of Manchester City’s success under Pep Guardiola, and we now used to seeing Stones play in midfield.

And it now looks as if £51m-rated Scalvini could enjoy a similar trajectory, especially at the Emirates.

Atalanta has proved to be an excellent place for the centre-back to develop, who looks like he could easily step into midfield.

And if a player is going to play understudy to Saliba at Arsenal, it is important that they also have opportunities to enter the team elsewhere.

Perhaps the price mentioned is still very good value for a profile like Scalvini, who does already have seven caps for Italy.

It would be a surprise if he wasn’t on the move in the summer, the likes of Manchester United are already linked.

And Arsenal and Arteta really could get ahead of the curve this summer if they made an early push for the Italian, who would complete their back line nicely.

That being said, a current Arsenal defender does now seem to be the most underrated player at the club.
