Arsenal’s interest in Aaron Wan-Bissaka suggests a different role for Ben White

Arsenal have been linked with a shock move to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka from relegated West Ham United this summer.

There have been links to several right-backs in recent months, and fans have assumed that any new signing in that role would be as a replacement for Ben White.

However, Mikel Arteta’s plan could be something different.

William Saliba is out for months due to a broken back, and Arsenal will need a solution in his position until he can play again.

If Wan-Bissaka comes in, we expect him to provide cover for Jurrien Timber at right-back, which means White would then move over to central defence.

That would be a full-circle moment for the Englishman, as he was initially signed by Arsenal to play as a right-centre-back next to Gabriel Magalhaes.

In fact, White was even handed Saliba’s original shirt number while the Frenchman was out on loan.

Arsenal have been looking at a few centre-backs on the market as potential cover for Saliba.

Ezri Konsa is a target for the Gunners, but his price tag is £60 million, which is a crazy amount of money for a 28-year-old. John Stones is another option for Arsenal, and he is a free agent, but his injury record is a worry.

White has a poor injury record too, but when he was a centre-back for the Gunners, he was almost always fit and played well.

Furthermore, the 28-year-old already has a good understanding with Gabriel, and he knows Arteta’s demands perfectly too.

As exciting as a new signing would be, we think White is the perfect solution to Arsenal’s Saliba problem.
