Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera is at risk of making a major error early in his career.

It’s been a year of bold choices for Mosquera, who struggled to leave Valencia to sign for Arsenal during the summer transfer window.

The centre-back made the decision to bid farewell to his boyhood club, even turning down a new contract in favour of joining Mikel Arteta’s project.

As Mosquera continues to prove his worth at Arsenal, the 21-year-old is now set to have another critical decision to make.

Cristhian Mosquera could change international allegiance from Spain to Colombia

Arsenal have no regrets signing Mosquera, who cost just £13m in the summer.

While the Gunners have no feeling of regret, the player could soon be immersed in the emotion based on how he responds to a crucial question.

Mosquera has been offered the chance to play for Colombia instead of Spain, whom he currently represents at U21 level.

Having Colombian parents and a Colombian passport, Mosquera is eligible to play for the nation, who are attempting to pry the defender away from Spain.

The offer is tempting with the World Cup in sight, as Mosquera could play a starring role in Colombia’s senior team on the biggest stage of them all, but there’s surely a fear that the elation would be short-lived.

Mosquera would be making a huge mistake

The idea of playing in the World Cup is so tempting, but Mosquera must look at the trajectory that his career is taking.

Already, the 21-year-old has shown that he’s more than good enough to play amongst the very best, something on offer in the Spanish national team.

There’s a golden generation looming in Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad, something Mosquera could very much be a part of, whether it’s at the 2026 World Cup or beyond.

Standing as the team to beat in FIFA’s rankings right now, Spain are on course to dominate the international stage for years to come, with rising talent leading the way.

Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Pau Cubarsi; several names who will be the shining lights of Spain’s national team for the foreseeable future, names that Mosquera could join at that level.

Persistence and patience could land Mosquera a trophy-laden international career as he continues to thrive at Arsenal, a dream that could disappear should he choose Colombia.
