Edu could sign ‘unplayable’ Dominic Solanke upgrade with £86m Arsenal transfer

Arsenal have been linked with several strikers in the January transfer window, including Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke.

The Englishman is one of a number of options linked with Mikel Arteta’s side, as Ivan Toney has also been mooted as a target for technical director Edu Gaspar.

However, another possible option recently emerged in Sporting Clube De Portugal’s Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish attacker only joined from Coventry City in the summer, but has quickly become one of the deadliest strikers in European football, and he is arguably a much better option for Arsenal than Solanke.

Victor Gyokeres would be better for Arsenal than Dominic Solanke

Arsenal fans reacted with some disappointment to the links between the club and Solanke, who has been fairly impressive for Bournemouth this season.

The Gunners are well stocked upfront, but recent reports have indicated that the club could be open to offers for Eddie Nketiah, who has scored five league goals so far this season.

If Arsenal are in the market for a clinical goalscorer, then Gyokeres could be an excellent option. The 25-year-old has scored 17 goals in 20 games across all competitions this season, and has also provided eight assists.

He scored in a crucial victory over Arsenal’s Champions League opponents FC Porto yesterday, and has been described as “unplayable” by his former teammate Maxime Biamou.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, the only way they can land Gyokeres in the January window is by paying his release clause, which stands at £86m.

This is too high for someone who was in the Championship last season, and would also prevent a summer move for Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen has been linked with a big-money summer move to The Emirates, having established himself as one of the best goalscorers in Europe with Napoli, but a January move for Solanke, Toney or Gyokeres which breaks the bank would likely rule Arsenal out of a move.

Edu and Arteta have some decisions to make, over which area of the pitch to prioritise in the winter window, and what kind of target to go for.

Given the injuries to Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber, a defender may be prioritised, as Arsenal are lacking in depth at the back, whilst there have been numerous links to midfielders.

If they also decide to add some attacking firepower to boost their title chances this season, they may have to sacrifice a future move for Osimhen to facilitate such a move.
