Forget the Premier League, Arsenal are set for Champions League glory if Mikel Arteta does one thing

Arsenal made it 16 points from a possible 21 in the Champions League with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Dinamo Zagreb.

Arsenal’s victory made it four wins out of four at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League and Mikel Arteta’s men are yet to concede a goal at home in the competition.

Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard were among the goalscorers and Kai Havertz was praised by fans for his stunning performance that included a goal and an assist.

The win all but secures Arsenal’s passage to the last-16 of the competition. Having already been knocked out of the FA Cup and facing huge deficits in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, the Gunners may well be looking upon their European adventure with extra ambition this season.

Arsenal look ‘designed’ to win the Champions League

The Champions League has been the one trophy that has evaded the Gunners in their illustrious history, the closest they came was a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in 2006.

Speaking on BBC’s Champions League Match of the Day, pundit Rory Smith believes that this could be the year that Arsenal finally break their European curse.

Smith believes that Arsenal are ‘designed’ to win the competition and ‘will outlast teams’ as they progress through to the knockout stages.

Arsenal were narrowly beaten by Bayern Munich at the Quarter Final stage last season, their first appearance in the competition since 2017.

Arsenal’s defensive solidity can win them the Champions League

Much has been made about Arsenal’s failing attack and how desperate they are for attacking reinforcements, Martin Keown has said they need to find a ‘special’ player.

However, Arteta does have one tool at his disposal that could be key to winning the Champions League – a competition where defensive solidity over the course of 180 minute ties is essential for success.

Creating chances hasn’t been a problem for Arsenal and if they can start to find the net with just a few more of their opportunities, the team has already proven it can keep opponents out at the other end.

In William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, the Gunners have arguably the best defensive pairing in Europe right now. Whilst strikers may win matches, defenders win you titles.

If Arsenal can continue to find that right balance between attack and defence in Europe’s most prestigious competition, then who knows what this team can achieve this season.
