Arsenal are still finalising their squad ahead of the challenges of the new season.

With two wins from two matches, Mikel Arteta will be pleased with Arsenal’s start to the season but injuries have already hit.

Bukayo Saka will miss up to a month and there is still no news on the extent of the knee injury suffered by Kai Havertz.

It means that Andrea Berta is still active in the market to ensure the Gunners have enough strength in depth to keep their trophy bids on track. One potential signing could give Arteta something that has never been seen in Premier League history.

Piero Hincapie will give Arsenal the greatest defensive depth in Premier League history

Arteta sees Piero Hincapie as the ‘ideal’ signing before the transfer window slams shut in order to add to his defensive options.

Jakub Kiwior is set for a move to Porto meaning that Hincapie will replace the Polish defender to provide cover and competition at centre back and left back.

The Gunners are pushing to complete a deal for Hincapie, believed to be in the region of £51m, although Berta is pushing for an initial loan move.

It would provide Arteta with strength in depth at the back never seen before in Premier League history, steeped with international experience and quality.

Arsenal’s potential defensive options this season

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have established themselves as one of the best centre back partnerships in world football.

Jurrien Timber and Ben White could both make a case for being the best right back in the league, whilst there is a real battle emerging at left back for a starting berth too.

Hincapie would only further strengthen the options that Arteta has and many would argue that his second choice defence would be stronger than most other first-choice defences around Europe.

Arsenal know defensive solidity will be key to trophy success

The Gunners have gradually improved their defensive record since Arteta took over in 2019 and have had the best record in the league in the previous two campaigns.

It was their attacking flaws that cost the club winning the league last season but are hoping that the additions of Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres can help solve those issues.

Two clean sheets in the opening two matches suggest that the Gunners will be solid defensively once again this season, although that will be tested in their next fixture at Anfield.

Should Hincapie arrive in North London, it would give Arsenal incredible depth at the back and a platform to once again have the meanest defence in the country.
