Mikel Arteta’s behind-the-scenes thoughts on signing Eberechi Eze at Arsenal are shocking now

Eberechi Eze secured a dream transfer to Arsenal in the summer window, or so he thought.

Arsenal fans were in awe as Andrea Berta hijacked Tottenham’s move for Eze, bringing the 27-year-old to the red side of North London.

At that moment, it was thought that things couldn’t get better, but they sure did, as Eze scored a hat-trick against Spurs in the North London Derby.

Since then, the Englishman hasn’t scored a Premier League goal for Arsenal, but quite frankly, that’s the least of his worries, as he’s not even playing.

Mikel Arteta was obsessed with signing Eberechi Eze at Arsenal

Eze’s lack of game time is so frustrating, even more so when revisiting what Mikel Arteta said before signing him in the summer.

In July, just before the transfer was sanctioned, Arteta told Arsenal’s board that he was obsessed with Eze.

The Arsenal manager was understood to have received positive reviews about the former Crystal Palace star from members of his Arsenal squad.

Arteta’s obsession was acted upon, and the Gunners welcomed Eze in a £67.5m deal, but since then, there’s been no sign of this ‘obsession’ in real life.

In fact, the boss’s treatment of Eze has been far from an obsession, as the playmaker is only averaging 56 minutes per game in the Premier League this season.

Given that Arsenal have had creative issues in attack, there’s no excuse not to play Eze more, but for some reason, Arteta has been reluctant to.

It must be said that it just makes the Spaniard’s summer stance on Eze seem unconvincing, as if there was even a drop of obsession with the player, we’d be seeing him a lot more than we do.

Arsenal’s stance on Mikel Merino’s injury is frustrating for Eze

Deadline day of the January transfer window has been a period of particular interest to Eze, as there’s been a lot of talk about Arsenal entering the market to sign a midfielder.

Given that Arteta has called upon Mikel Merino ahead of Eze frequently this season, the Spaniard’s injury presented more opportunities for the summer signing, but a replacement would only alter the pecking order again.

If Arsenal were to bring in a top midfielder, like Sandro Tonali, who has been linked, what would that say about Eze?

The playmaker is capable of playing in the number 10, eight and on the flank, so could replace Merino if required.

For now, Eze’s full focus will be on the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on Tuesday night, a derby he’ll be desperate to leave his mark on once again.
