Former Arsenal star Kevin Campbell believes there’s a chance that Granit Xhaka could leave the Emirates in January despite signing a new contract just a few weeks ago.

Rumours led fans to believe that Xhaka was on his way to Roma this summer. A deal even looked imminent at one point, but Jose Mourinho’s side could not reach an agreement with Arsenal and the Swiss international was retained.

Arsenal extended Xhaka’s contract until 2024. A summer exit was ruled out weeks before transfer deadline day, but Campbell now believes that the midfielder, labelled ‘phenomenal’ by Mikel Arteta, could well depart in January.

Kevin Campbell: Granit Xhaka could leave Arsenal in January

Asked if Xhaka could leave in the winter window, Campbell said on The Highbury Squad YouTube channel: “Never say never, if I am honest with you.

“I would never say never because now there is a really, really good opportunity for Partey and Sambi to get a grip of this team from the middle of the pitch. Really important that they take control of the midfield. (If) they do the business, then what does it do?

“It means that Granit Xhaka can’t get in, and I think maybe that was the straw that broke the camel’s back, to give Sambi that opportunity beside Thomas Partey.”

The Insider’s View:

Granit Xhaka is suspended for Arsenal’s next three games following his red card against Manchester City. That leaves a big hole in the middle of the park and Mikel Arteta is expected to turn to summer signing Albert Sambi Lokonga to fill the void.

The Belgian has thoroughly impressed since joining us. He has been one of our biggest positives this season, and if he can form a good partnership with Thomas Partey, who is set to be available after the break, Arteta has no reason to change things.

However, it is extremely unlikely that Xhaka will leave Arsenal in January. Arteta clearly trusts the Swiss international and with Partey’s injury woes still very much a concern, it would make no sense to offload him just a few months after extending his deal.
